What is a Recreational Skippers Ticket?
Under new legislation issued in February 2006, it is a requirement for all boat owners and recreational skippers
in Western Australia to hold a recognised ticket referred to as the Recreational Skippers Ticket.
The RST is a government initiative to ensure a safer environment for all recreational skippers.
The Department for Planning and Infrastructure has implemented this change to bring Western Australia into
line with other States and Territories.
When do I need to get my RST by?
Everyone aged over 14 must hold an RST in order to skipper a Recreational vessel (including Jet Skis) .
Do I qualify for an exemption?
There are also certain exemptions for prior qualifications or skills recognition
that may apply depending on your circumstances/experience. Please check to see if these may apply to

There are three options available:
- Theoretical
- Practical
- Full Assessment

The joint Theory and Practical session takes approximately 4-5hrs. The Theory and Assessment course goes for 2-3 hours, and the Practical Only is approximately 3 hours.

Boat users in the handling and maintaining of their vessels.
We invite you to have an enjoyable time where you can obtain your Recreational Skippers Ticket (RST) in a supportive environment, assisting you to gain confidence in a relaxed atmosphere.
How much does it cost?
$180 is the total cost, whereas if you do in parts then the cost of the Theory and Assessment is $60 and this includes a 2-3 hour refresher training session. The practical session is $120, on a supplied vessel and this runs for approximately 3 hours.
What if I don't pass my theory assessment first time?
Thats okay, we will invite you to our next theory training session and a further opportunity to sit your assessment will be offered to you at no extra cost. (this will apply until you pass.)
Do I have to do both the Theory and Practical assessments at the same time?
No – but you can not perform the practical assessment until you have passed the theory exam
I own a Jet Ski, does this mean I also have to get my Recreational Skippers Ticket?
Yes the RST is a requirement for all persons in charge of a recreational vessel (including personal watercraft)with a motor greater than 4.5 kilowatts (6hp).
