RST Course Details

OPTION 1

The most popular course is the ‘Weekender’ which occurs most Saturdays and Sundays whereby you need to read the RST Workbook (as no training will be provided to complete the theory session). Once you have completed (and passed) your theory exam, you’ll then complete the Practical session which includes training and assessment on our vessel.

Bookings are Essential as numbers are limited

OPTION 2

This option is more comprehensive and performed over 2 days, whereby the Theory session is performed mid-week in the evening from 6.00pm and the practical session on the weekend

Theory and Assessment

This is a two to three hour interactive training session that will go through the Recreational Skippers Workbook and give all participants a good background to enable you to complete the theory assessment.

Applicants will have 60 minutes to complete the 30 multiple choice questions and must answer 80% (at least 24/30) correctly to be deemed competent.

It is essential you familiarise yourself with the RST Workbook theory section prior to attending this session

Organise a group of 5 or more at your venue and we’ll come to you, this could be your home, workplace, sporting club or similar.

Different packages can also be arranged and these can be tailored to suit your needs, for example one on one practical training, understanding your own vessel – you tell us what you wish to achieve and we’ll accommodate our resources.

Practical Assessment

The practical assessment will be performed on a suitable vessel, which will cater for both small and larger vessel users.

The Practical Assessment will include the 11 Tasks as stipulated in the Recreational Skippers Workbook, whereby the assessor will go through in detail demonstrating each of the tasks, with each participant performing each task.

Before an applicant can be accepted for the Practical Assessment they must have successfully completed the theory assessment.

The practical assessment of the RST is based on the Department for Planning and Infrastructure's RST Competency Standards. These standards specify tasks that a skipper must be able to demonstrate. Applicants are not expected to be fully competent skippers, as total competence takes years to develop and it cannot be assessed on the basis of only a couple of hours of direct evidence.

During assessment, applicants will be given clear directions and no attempt will be made to confuse or mislead them. Every effort will be made to deliver a uniform assessment standard to all applicants, the assessor will gather evidence of the quality of an applicant’s skippering and extent to which they have developed safe skippering habits.

The assessment will include many low-speed manoeuvres, and higher speed control.
